Babies arrive in the world already equipped with many skills, reflexes and instincts that help them adapt to and influence their environment as well as the people who fill it. This book aims to help parents see the world as their baby's does so that they become better equipped to help this learning process along. It explains how babies find out about themselves and their physical and social environments through a combination of interaction, experience, trial and error, and nurturing.
The book is divided into five sections dealing with different aspects of a baby's life, from birth through to toddlerhood. The first part looks at infant behaviour, with the aim of helping parents to understand how a newborn adapts to life outside the womb; the second examines babies' early experiences in the social world, looking at how they respond to others and start forming a sense of self; this is followed by a look at the world of words, examining how a baby learns to understand and produce language; the fourth section deals with the physical world and a baby's gross and fine motor development, looking at the ways in which a baby gains control over his or her body, becomes mobile and learns about objects; and finally the last section examines a baby's developing intelligence, including discussions on memory and problem solving skills. Throughout, there are helpful tips and suggestions about how parents can positively influence their child's journey towards independence through a better understanding of the world from a baby's perspective.
